Why neuter my cat?

Clients who do not intend to breed their cats will typically neuter their cats for various reasons including personal choice, help prevent unwanted pregnancies, certain health risks that affect each sex of cat, and sometimes to help with behaviour.  It is best to seek your vets advice before making this decision.

Male Cat Castrate

Male cat neutering is called a castration, whereby the cat’s testicles are removed.  The procedure will require the cat to be put under general anaesthetic. 

This will stop the cat from being able to produce any new sperm and long term unable to cause any pregnancies.  Be aware despite the testicles being removed, male cats are still able to impregnate a female cat up to 6 weeks so have measures in place until this period has lapsed.

There can always be various risks with surgical procedures so it is best to speak to your vet before deciding on the procedure.  Age, health, breed and various other factors and risk should be considered with your vet before proceeding. 

 

Benefits from procedure

• Certain behaviour benefits can occur.

• It can help reduce marking behaviours whereby the cat uses spraying behaviour (urine) around the house to mark their territory, but results can vary on this.  

• Roaming behaviour, unneutered male cats have a higher urge to roam, which makes them at higher risk of road traffic accidents which can be serious or even fatal.

Female cat spay

Female cat neutering is called a spay, whereby the ovaries and womb are removed.  The procedure will require the cat to be put under general anaesthetic.  After the procedure is done the female cat can no longer have kittens.

Benefits

• Removes the risk of unwanted pregnancies, having unplanned pregnancies can be costly and stressful.  Charities are already overwhelmed by the number of unwanted animals so reducing the number of accidental pregnancies will help with this.

• Cats will no long be in season, when female cats get in season they can become very noisy with their cat calls, which in turn attract male cats.

• Helps reduce the risk of certain cancers.
