Rabbit Neutering

Clients who do not intend to breed their rabbits will typically neuter their rabbits for various reasons including personal choice, help prevent unwanted pregnancies, certain health risks that affect each sex of rabbit, and sometimes to help with their behaviour.  It is best to seek your vets advice before making this decision.

Male (Buck) rabbit castration

Male rabbit neutering is called a castration, whereby the rabbit’s testicles are removed.  The procedure will require the rabbit to be put under general anaesthetic.  Be aware despite the testicles being removed, male rabbits are still able to impregnate a unneutered rabbit cat up to 6 weeks so have measures in place until this period has lapsed.

There can always be various risks with surgical procedures so it is best to speak to your vet before deciding on the procedure.  Age, health, breed and various other factors and risk should be considered with your vet before proceeding.

Some benefits of castrating

  • Marking behaviour, unneutered rabbits will mark a lot more so neutering can help reduce this.

  • Improves temperament, unneutered rabbits, especially males can become very aggressive.

  • Improves socialisation with pairings of rabbits.

  • Stop unwanted pregnancies.

Female (Doe) rabbit spay

Female rabbit neutering is called a spay, whereby the ovaries and womb are removed.  The procedure will require the rabbit to be put under general anaesthetic.  After the procedure is done the female rabbit can no longer have babies.

There can always be various risks with surgical procedures so it is best to speak to your vet before deciding on the procedure.  Age, health, breed and various other factors and risk should be considered with your vet before proceeding.

Benefits

Removes the risk of unwanted pregnancies, having unplanned pregnancies can be costly and stressful.  Charities are already overwhelmed by the number of unwanted animals so reducing the number of accidental pregnancies will help with this.
